Associate Professor Cheeno Marlo M. Sayuno received his BA Mass Communication degree from Cavite State University, MA in Communication Arts degree from UP Los Baños, and PhD Communication degree from the College of Mass Communication, UP Diliman. For his accomplishments in research and creative work, he has been conferred the award of University Artist 1 under the UP Arts Productivity System Award (CY 2019-2021 and 2022-2024). He has also been a recipient of other grants and awards in UPLB and the UP System, including the UPLB College of Arts and Sciences Outstanding Teacher and Researcher Awards (Social Sciences and Humanities cluster, senior category); the UPLB Centennial Professorial Chair Award; the 2019-2021 and 2022-2024 One UP Faculty Grant in Literature (Children’s Literature) for Outstanding Teaching and Creative Work; and the Enhanced Creative Work and Research Grant.
He has received recognition from the prestigious Carlos Palanca Memorial Awards for Literature (2nd place in the Maikling Kuwentong Pambata category in 2013 and 3rd place in the Short Story for Children category in 2017), the Philippine Board on Books for Young People’s Salanga Prize (honorable mention in 2015), and the Normal Awards for Gender-Inclusive Literature by Philippine Normal University (1stplace for Maikling Kuwentong Pambata category in 2021). He has published storybooks with Adarna House, Lampara Books, Anvil Publishing, Chikiting Books, and Save the Children Philippines, as well as various textbooks and research work in communication, media, and related fields. He has co-edited Bata, Hiwaga, at Bansa: Pamana ni Rene Villanueva sa Panitikang Pambata published by UP Press and Suring Supling: Kalipunan ng mga Rebyu ng mga Akdang Pambata sa Pilipinas published by UP Sentro ng Wikang Filipino. He has also contributed a book chapter on LGBTQ+ children’s literature in the Philippines with the International LGBTQ+ Literature for Children and Young Adults (Anthem Press UK). He has published articles with Jeunesse: Young People, Texts, Cultures; International Research in Children’s Literature; the ASEAN Journal of Community Engagement; the Diliman Review; Plaridel: A Philippine Journal of Communication, Media, and Society’ Philippine Communication Society Review; and the UPLB Journal. He also has forthcoming book chapter publications with various collections, such as Mobile Media Use Among Children and Youth in Asia (Springer); Palgrave Handbook of Drag; Children’s Literature, Culture and Cognition (John Benjamins); Routledge Companion to Gender and Childhood; and Gender and the Male Character in 21stCentury Fairy Tale Narratives (Emerald Publishing).
Currently, Dr. Sayuno also serves as the Secretary of the Philippine Association for Communication and Media Researchers, Inc.; the Treasurer of Supling Sining, Inc.; and an active member of the International Research Society for Children’s Literature. He also serves as the Associate Editor of Makiling Review: An International Journal of Humanities and serves at the editorial advisory board of the International Research in Children’s Literature.
