PACMRI, UP DCRES ink NCRC 2024 Partnership
Manila, Philippines – PACMRI partners with the UP Department of Communication Research for the National Communication Research Conference (NCRC) 2024.
The NCRC is a triannual research conference hosted by the UP Department of Communication Research (DCRes) that promotes awareness about the importance of communication and media research to society.
PACMRI found its endeavor aligned with the NCRC, advocating for the systematic study of developments, changes, and challenges in Philippine communication and media, sharing academic work, and assisting in connecting research practitioners and institutions in the field of communication and media.
The theme of this year’s NCRC is concentrated on the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, "Blueprints and Imprints: The UN Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs) in Communication and Media Research". It aims to focus on the complexities and nuances of communication and media research in the context of the SDGs as the enabling framework for change.
PACMRI President Dr. Rosel San Pascual emphasizes the contribution of communication and media scholarship in the Philippines in advancing and fulfilling the SDGs. “Given that sustainable development is a set of universal goals, all of us should be onboard in doing our own fair share in facilitating the realization of these goals”, she explained. Key work includes identifying, discussing, and responding to research gaps in fulfillment of these goals.
The SDGs, established in 2012, aims to produce a series of global objectives that address the pressing environmental, political, and economic issues the world is currently experiencing.
The UP DCRES Chair Dr. Randy Solis, shared in an interview the relevance of this discourse in the field of communication and media. “We appreciate the role of communication research in achieving the SDGs, not only in terms of strategic planning and evaluation of development programs and projects, but also in the generation of knowledge, of blueprint and imprints, which may be used in sustaining the goals for the betterment of society. This is how communication, media, and research remain relevant, for scholars and practitioners alike.”
“It is critical for communication and media studies to understand how our increasingly mediatized lives have facilitated the attainment of SDGs on the one hand, and have created impediments in the achievement of SDGs on the other hand”, Dr. San Pascual noted.
The PACMRI-DCRes partnership was officially signed and witnessed during the PACMRI General Assembly held in August 2024, at the UP College of Mass Communication.
Dr. San Pascual sees this endeavor as favorable for communication and media scholars to commune.
“We envision to create a stronger community of communication and media scholars who will pursue responsive, reflexive, and responsible communication and media research in the country”, she said.
PACMRI is expected to assist in the design, implementation, and evaluation of NCRC 2024.
The National Communication Research Conference 2024 will take place on 22-23 November at the Teresa Yuchengco Auditorium, De La Salle University Manila. The early bird registration rates can be availed until 20 October 2024. However, all PACMRI members, based on participant category, can avail of the early bird rate throughout the registration period. Interested participants may visit the NCRC and PACMRI Facebook Pages for updates.
